Freedom fighter ends fast after pension assurance

Ranchi: Hunger strike was ended by a 99 years old freedom fighter and his 86 years old wife on getting assurance of pension from government.

Cheddi Ram with his wife lives in GOdda district, 500 km far from Ranchi, went on ger strike near Raj Bhawan. He affirmed that he was an active participant in the Quit India Movement but was not accorded with pension despite efforts since 1981.




He was lifted forcefully from the place where he was striking and shifted to Rajendra Institue of Medical Science - ICU in Ranchi.


 District administration of Ranchi took initiative to end their srtike. Sub-Divisional Officer Shekhar Jamuar met the couple in RIMS and badgered them to end the strike. By taking a sip of juice the Elderly couple ended the strike.



Jamuar then helped the couple to speak to the deputy commissioner of Godda district and they got assurance from him of getting pension soon.




Arun Pandey of the Jharkhand unit of the National Senior Citizens Forum said, “The couple ended their fast after assurances given by the district administration. The administration has assured to start old age pension and initiate steps to get him freedom fighter pension."


The couple informed that they have been trying for pension since 1981 but failed to get.

"On Oct 13, we informed the governor, chief minister, chief secretary and others that we would sit on indefinite hunger strike if our demand for pension was not cleared by Oct 30," Ram said.

 Authorities verified that any person who fought for the freedom of country is entitled to get a monthly pension of Rs. 3,000.
