Senior Appreciation Speech

The term senior can be viewed as a person who’s over the hill; an individual who has discount card for some stores or places; or can be defined by picturing an individual with dentures in their mouth, white hair and a cane in their hand.
In the society we live in today, we fail to recognize the honor of being a senior. Senior citizens who follow God deserve a great deal of honor. While our culture highly values youth, according to Proverbs 16:31, the gray hair of an older individual is a crown of glory, if the individual is living a righteous life. What is honor? Honor means to treat with respect or favor.

Why should we honor the elderly? Honoring the elderly is not just a matter of good manners or following the norms of society. Honoring our elders is an act of God, which is recorded in Leviticus, 19:32: “Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD." Therefore, one reason that we should honor the elderly is because God commands us to do so.
Another reason that we should honor senior citizens is because of their wisdom, which they have gained through years of experience, and experience is often the best teacher. They know first-hand what it's like to live through tragedies and triumphs, times of war and peace, both personally and as a member of a society. They have had the time to see the effects of good and evil and have learned to see the likely results of their decisions. They are a living testament that people survive through the good and bad. There is a time in the year when the calendar reminds us to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day. Millions of people take the time to honor Mom and Dad with greeting cards, a special dinner out and perhaps even a gift. Today, we are here to honor and celebrate the senior’s in our church. We are thankful for having you in our lives and in our worship space.
You represent the beauty, the uniqueness, and the blossoming wisdom you have. May the good Lord continue to bless you.
